Soil health is a priority for ELMs and the SFI currently includes 3 soil standards which payments will be available for management in an environmentally sustainable way:
- arable and horticultural soils
- improved grassland soils
- moorland
One of the requirements for the standards is to complete a soil assessment and produce a soil management plan, which can be a really useful baseline to inform how you could manage grazing and cropping in the future to benefit both the farm business and the environment.
Contact your local Catchment Sensitive Farming officer for support and advice (see link below), or an independent farm adviser for help completing a soil assessment (funding may be available).
